History of IRED conferences
The Integration of Renewable & Distributed Energy Resources (IRED) conference series originated from an initiative launched during the visit of the European IRED Project Cluster delegation to the US Department of Energy, various research institutes, and the California Energy Commission in the USA. The European Cluster comprised seven Smart Grid projects with over 100 partner institutions, coordinated by Jürgen Schmid and Philipp Strauß at ISET, the predecessor of the Fraunhofer IEE.
This US-EU initiative aimed to facilitate the exchange of experiences gained from numerous projects and foster international collaboration in renewable energy and smart grid integration. Since the inaugural IRED conference in Brussels, the event has been held nearly every two years and has expanded to other continents, including Asia (Japan) and Australia. As the demand for clean energy solutions continues to grow, the IRED scientific committee remains dedicated to extending the conference’s reach to additional regions, striving to make IRED a truly global event in the field of renewable energy and distributed energy resources.
Given the rapid advancements in Smart Grid technology, energy storage, and decentralized power generation, as well as the increasing need to address urgent challenges in the energy sector, DERlab, in collaboration with members of IRED’s scientific committee, initiated the complementary IREDonline series. IREDonline is designed to enhance the impact of the physical IRED conferences by focusing on specialized topics in renewable energy integration. These topics will be explored across broad dimensions, including energy policy, market trends, technological innovations, socio-economic implications, and regulatory frameworks. By offering a virtual platform, IREDonline ensures that experts, researchers, and industry leaders from around the world can participate, exchange insights, and drive forward the transition to a smarter, more resilient energy system.
